TS Playfair is a steel-hulled, square-rigged brigantine built in 1973 in Kingston, Ontario, and christened by Queen Elizabeth II - making her the only Canadian ship ever commissioned by a reigning monarch. Purpose-built for sail training by designer Francis A. McLachlan, she's operated by Brigs Youth Sail Training (formerly Toronto Brigantine Inc.), a charity running since 1962. What sets her apart: except for the captain and mate, the entire crew - 18 trainees and several youth officers - are teenagers aged 13 to 18, learning to sail, work as a team, and take on real leadership responsibility. She sails the Great Lakes each summer out of her Hamilton, Ontario homeport, with voyages that mix sailing, swimming, campfires, and port visits.
