Built in 1930 in the Netherlands as a cargo motor sailer, Thor Heyerdahl was transformed into a three-masted topsail schooner in the early 1980s and has since become one of Germany's most celebrated sail training vessels. Home-ported in Kiel, she is best known for her long-running "Classroom under Sail" programme, semester-long ocean voyages in which school students live and learn aboard the ship, sailing to the Caribbean and back while continuing their education at sea. Between Atlantic crossings she sails the Baltic from spring to autumn, taking young people on shorter training voyages. Named after the Norwegian explorer and adventurer who inspired one of her founders, Thor Heyerdahl embodies the spirit of discovery that defines her namesake.
On board Thor Heyerdahl, hands-on sailing cruises await, where you'll learn to sail without prior experience – steer, navigate, dive and feel the rhythm of the ocean under sail. What makes these cruises special?
On this historic tall ship you'll gain practical sailing lessons under the guidance of an experienced crew.
Cruises emphasize sustainable contact with the ocean – expect diving from Zodiacs, observing wildlife and relaxing under the stars, without mass tourism, providing deep soul renewal.
From training to tourist – on Thor Heyerdahl you'll get a combination of adventure and luxury, like fine dining under sail or snorkeling in crystal clear waters, building unforgettable memories.
Expect unique cabins with bathrooms, a library and bar on board – this distinguishes the ship, offering 'old money' elegance with a splash of salt, ideal for families, couples or groups seeking authentic maritime elegance.

Every cruise is more than a journey - it's memories that last long after you step ashore. Our participants share their stories, emotions and moments that are hard to put into words... but which we try to capture right here.
I thought it would just be a holiday. It was a journey that cleared my soul. Every sunrise on deck reminded me that you can live slower and deeper.

Norway, tourist cruise
A sailing cruise should be exciting, not stressful. And yet - we know that feeling. Doubts whether you'll cope. Chaos in offers. Questions about logistics that no one answers straight. We listen to passengers and travellers - we know what holds them back from setting sail.
