The Spark: Why We Built Tall Ship Cruise Search Engine

It all started on the water.

Tolek had just come back from a tall ship sailing trip in the Azores - the kind of trip that stays with you. Wind in the sails, open ocean, a crew figuring things out together. He was hooked. Naturally, the next thought was: okay, where do I book my next tall ship cruise?

That's where the good vibes ran out.

Trying to find another tall ship voyage meant digging through a messy patchwork of operator websites - some outdated, some barely functional, none of them speaking the same language when it came to basic info. Trip length? Buried in a PDF. Skill level required? Good luck. Price, itinerary, ship specs - every operator had their own format, or no format at all. There was no single place to actually compare tall ship cruises side by side. You just had to know where to look, and even then, you were mostly guessing.

Frustrated but not deterred, Tolek started talking it through with his friend Maciek. What began as a couple of "this really shouldn't be this hard" conversations turned into full-blown, late-night strategy sessions - the kind with too much coffee and a whiteboard full of half-formed ideas. Somewhere in there, the idea clicked: what if someone just built the thing that should already exist? A single, global platform dedicated entirely to tall ship travel - nothing else, no distractions, just tall ships done right.

That idea became Cruise Tall Ship - with Tolek and Maciek as co-founders. Tolek leads operations, Maciek leads technology, and together they set out to build it.

That's the short version of how this project came to be.

The Market Reality: The Tall Ship Cruise Industry Is Still Analog

Once we started digging into the tall ship cruise world from the inside, the picture became a lot clearer - and honestly, more surprising than we expected.

It's deeply fragmented. There are dozens of independent operators out there, running genuinely incredible vessels - traditional schooners, brigantines, barques, tall ships with real history behind them. But almost none of them are connected to each other in any meaningful way. Everyone's operating in their own silo, with their own booking process, their own website (if they have one), their own way of doing things.

Digitalization is low. We're talking paper forms. Manual email threads back and forth to confirm a booking. Legacy websites that look like they haven't been touched since the early 2000s. For an industry built around adventure and exploration, the back-office side of things is stuck behind.

And the result? Empty berths. This is the part that really got us. Despite genuinely strong global demand for unique, off-the-beaten-path travel experiences, operators regularly sail with cabins unfilled - not because people don't want to sail with them, but because those people simply never found them. Visibility is the bottleneck, not demand.

That gap - between a tall ship industry full of incredible experiences and a total lack of way to discover them - is exactly what we set out to close.

Phase I: The World's Largest Tall Ship Cruise Search Engine (Live Now)

The first step was solving the discovery problem, head-on.

Today, our tall ship cruise search engine centralizes 400+ active cruises in one place, so you can actually compare your options side by side instead of hopping between a dozen browser tabs. No more guessing games, no more digging through PDFs - just clear, standardized info you can filter and compare.

We also built categorization around how sailors actually think about their trips, not how operators happen to organize their own sites:

  • Holiday - relaxed ocean getaways for people who just want the tall ship experience without the intensity
  • Training - hands-on seamanship and sail training for those who want to actually learn the ropes (sometimes literally)
  • Expedition - voyages into remote, challenging waters for the more adventurous crowd
  • Maritime Events - regattas, Tall Ship Races, and fleet gatherings for people who want to be part of something bigger

Whatever kind of tall ship cruise you're after - Holiday, Training, Expedition, or a spot at one of the Tall Ship Races events - the goal is the same: get you to the right voyage faster, with real information you can trust.

This part of the platform is live right now - it's not a concept, not a mockup. It's out there working today.

Phase II: The End-to-End Tall Ship Operator Ecosystem (Target: Q4 2026)

Discovery was step one. But we didn't want to stop at just helping people find a tall ship cruise - we want to fix the whole experience, for sailors and operators alike.

That's where Phase II comes in: a purpose-built CRM designed specifically to modernize fleet management for tall ship operators.

The idea is to streamline the full lifecycle in one connected system - from discovery on the search engine, straight through to direct bookings, automated payments, and post-cruise feedback. No more juggling five different tools (or a notebook and a calculator) to run a fleet. One system, start to finish.

On top of that, we're building a direct communication portal - a way for operators and passengers to share real-time updates and documents without relying on scattered email chains. Departure changes, weather updates, paperwork, whatever needs to get from operator to passenger (or back) - handled in one place.

We're targeting Q4 2026 for this, and it's genuinely the part of the project we're most excited about, because it's where the platform stops being just a search tool and starts being real infrastructure for the industry.

An Open Call to the Tall Ship & Maritime Community

None of this works in a vacuum. We're actively building this alongside the people who actually live and breathe the tall ship industry, and we'd love for you to be part of it.

If you're a fleet operator: we want to help you streamline your bookings and fill those empty berths with sailors who are genuinely looking for what you offer - whether that's a Holiday sail, a Training voyage, an Expedition, or a place in the next Tall Ship Races. If you're tired of running things off email and spreadsheets, let's talk.

If you're a creator or storyteller: bloggers, photographers, videographers, anyone documenting life on the water - we'd love to collaborate. Tall ship cruising has an incredible story to tell, and it deserves a place in the digital world that actually does it justice.

This is still early days. We're a small team with a big, slightly obsessive idea — bring the entire tall ship cruise world online, properly, in one place. If that resonates with you in any way, get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.
